Tips for Keeping Your Horse Healthy During the Winter

Jennifer Foster • December 15, 2023

As winter approaches, it is crucial to ensure that your horse's health and well-being are taken care of. Here are some tips and insights on how to keep your equine companion healthy, happy, and thriving during the colder months. From providing proper nutrition to shelter and exercise, take steps to ensure your horse's welfare throughout the winter season.

7 Winter Horse Care Tips

Shelter Matters

One of the first considerations is ensuring your horse has proper shelter.

Whether it's a stable, run-in shed, or well-designed barn, a shelter protects your horse from harsh wind, rain, and snow. Adequate ventilation is crucial to preventing condensation. So check for any drafts and make the necessary repairs to keep your horse cozy and sheltered from the chilly winds.

Blanketing

Blanketing your horse can be beneficial in extreme cold, especially for those with short coats or clipped hair. However, not all horses need blankets.

If your horse is shivering or showing signs of discomfort, know your sign and get a blanket. There are two main types to consider: turnout blankets and stable blankets.

Turnout blankets are waterproof, breathable, and made from durable materials like ballistic nylon. They’re the best blankets to use outdoors. On the other hand, stable blankets are not waterproof, often have thicker insulation, and are ideal for indoor use.

Make sure the blanket fits your horse. It should cover the neck and body without causing chafing. Also, regularly check for moisture under the blanket to prevent skin issues.

Proper Horse Nutrition

Winter demands extra energy to keep horses warm. An average horse needs to consume roughly 2% of its body weight daily to maintain its health and condition. However, when the temperatures drop, horses expend more energy to stay warm.

The nutritional value of pasture grass tends to drop during the winter. Thus, you’ll need to rely on hay and grains, both excellent sources of warmth through digestion. Couple this with some supplements, and you’re good to go.

Numerous high-quality horse feeds are available that provide everything your horse needs, making it easy for you to fill, feed, and repeat.

Hydration

While it might seem counterintuitive, horses need as much water in the winter as they do in the summer. Proper hydration is essential for digestion and overall well-being, especially during cold weather when horses may be less inclined to drink.

Ensure access to clean, unfrozen water at all times. If needed, consider using heated water buckets or tank heaters to prevent freezing.

Hoof Care

Icy and snowy conditions can lead to uneven terrain and the potential for snowballing on hooves. Thus, regular hoof care, including trimming and shoeing, is crucial.

Invest in hoof picks designed to remove snow and ice, preventing discomfort and potential injuries. Apply a generous hoof conditioner to keep the hooves from drying out.

Regular Exercise

Cold weather often tempts us to keep our horses indoors, but regular exercise is vital for their physical and mental well-being.

If outdoor conditions allow, engage your horse in light exercise to prevent stiffness and promote circulation. Indoor activities, such as lunging or hand walking, can also help maintain their fitness levels.

Veterinary Care

Regular veterinary check-ups are essential to catch any health issues early.

Schedule a winter check-up to assess your horse's overall health, dental condition, and weight. Discuss vaccinations and deworming with your veterinarian to protect against winter-specific health threats. Addressing any concerns can prevent more significant issues down the line.
